Month of Mail - May & June 2022

I managed to add 16 new NHL player autographs during the past couple of months. The majority of these, including the Papercuts, come from a 1933/34 team signed Maple Leafs sheet. The grand total of unique NHL player autographs in my collection is now 7213 for 90% of everyone to ever play in the NHL.

                       George Hainsworth (d. 1950)
George Hainsworth is a legendary goalie. He won the Vezina Trophy the first three years it was awarded, 1927-1929. He was a multiple time Stanley Cup winner and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

                         Joe Primeau (d. 1989)
A member of Toronto's famous Kid Line, Joe Primeau helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 1932. He scored 50 points in 45 games that season and also took home the Lady Byng Trophy. The Hockey Hall of Famer won a second Cup in 1951 as head coach of the Maple Leafs.

                         Busher Jackson (d. 1966)
Busher Jackson was the NHL's leading scorer of the 1931-32 season. That year he also helped Toronto win the Stanley Cup. A member of the Kid Line with Joe Primeau and Charlie Conacher, Jackson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971.

                         Charlie Conacher (d. 1967)
In a time before there was an Art Ross Trophy for the honor, Charlie Conaher led the NHL in scoring twice, 1933/34 and 1934/35. He also led the NHL in goals five different seasons (1930/31, 1931/32, 1933/34, 1934/35 and 1935/36) before there was a Rocket Richard Trophy. A Cup winner in 1932, Conacher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.

                     Gordie Drillon (d. 1986)
Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Drillon was one of the most prolific scorers of his time. With 26 goals and 52 points in 48 games with the 1936-37 Maple Leafs, Drillon led the entire NHL in points at a time before there was an Art Ross Trophy. He did win the Lady Byng Trophy that season. Drillon helped Toronto win the 1942 Stanley Cup.
*This autograph doesn't scan well but is much more visible in hand.

                             Hap Day (d. 1990)
Happy Day is a Toronto Maple Leafs legend. A defenseman, he captain the team to the 1932 Stanley Cup championship and then coached the team to 5 more Stanley Cup championships. He got his name on the trophy a seventh time as Toronto's assistant GM in 1951. Day was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.

                      Ken Doraty (d. 1981)
From 1926 to 1938 Ken Doraty played over 100 NHL games. He played for the Blackhawks, Maple Leafs and Red Wings.

                      Charlie Sands (d. 1953)
From 1932 to 1944 Charlie Sands played over 400 games in the NHL. He played for the Maple Leafs, Bruins, Canadiens and Rangers. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 1939.

                        Hec Kilrea (d. 1969)
Hec Kilrea spent 15 seasons in the NHL, playing well over 600 games. He played for the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Falcons, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. He won the Stanley Cup with Ottawa in 1927 and with Detroit in 1936 and 1937. His brothers, Ken and Wally, were also NHL players.

                      Claude Provost (d. 1984)
A long time member of the Montreal Canadiens defense, Claude Provost holds the dubious distinction of having won the most Stanley Cups (9) and not being in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was overshadowed by so many others star players but he was a big member of the Habs dynasty.

                       Bruce Holloway
Defenseman Bruce Holloway played 2 games in the NHL with the 1984-85 Vancouver Canucks. His son, Dylan, recently played in the NHL with the Oilers.
Unfortunately for me, Bruce doesn't seem to answer fan mail as I had sent him many letters over the years. He ran a helicopter company after leaving the game. This autograph came from a team signed pennant.

                        Anders Hakansson
This TTM request took an incredible 9 YEARS to return to me from Sweden and I'd long ago given up hope. What a surprise! Hakansson is one of only a handful of living retired NHLers I had never been able to reach. From 1981 to 1986 the Swedish forward played well over 300 NHL games between the Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins and LA Kings. He scored 52 goals and 98 points in the NHL. He represented Sweden at the 1981 World Championships and Canada Cup in in 1982 and 1985.

              Urho Vaakanainen
Finnish defenseman Urho Vaakanainen was drafted 18th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2017. He played 31 games with the Bruins and this past year was traded to the Anaheim Ducks where he played another 14 NHL games. He helped Finland win Gold at the 2019 World Juniors.

                 Adam Brooks
Since 2019 Adam Brooks has played 43 games in the NHL, scoring 6 goals and 11 points. He's been a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets. He helped the Toronto Marlies win the 2018 Calder Cup.

                    Josh Teves
Princeton University alumni Josh Teves played 1 NHL game with the 2018-19 Vancouver Canucks.

                 Kevin Stenlund
From 2019 to 2022 Swedish defenseman Kevin Stenlund played 71 games in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

                        Conn Smythe (d. 1980)
Conn Smythe is one of the biggest figures in Toronto Maple Leafs history. He owned the team from 1927 to 1961 and spent much of that time as General Manager. He also spent some time as head coach of the Leafs. Smythe has his name on the Stanley Cup 8 times.

                         Jim Weaver
Jim Weaver dressed in 7 NHL games as a backup goalie with the 1978-79 Buffalo Sabres. This goes with my collection of NHL backup goalies.

                       Jim Campbell
Jim Campbell dressed in 1 NHL game as an emergency backup with the 1982-83 Edmonton Oilers. He dressed as Andy Moog's backup with Grant Fuhr came down with the flue and couldn't play in a game against the Vancouver Canucks. Local WHL goalie Jim Campbell was an NHL teammate of Wayne Gretzky's for 1 game.

                                Don Gordon
Don Gordon spent a couple seasons in the WHA. He played 94 games between the Los Angeles Sharks and Chicago Cougars. This goes into my WHA collection

                        Kelly Terry
This goes with my collection of women of the game. Upper Deck produced some cards for members of the National team and I've slowly been working on getting some signed. Terry is most notable for winning a Silver medal as a member of the 2015 Canada Women's World Championship team. Her father, Bill Terry, briefly played in the NHL.
