Month of Mail - March 2020

March, 2020 saw 34 new NHL autographs arrive in the mail. The majority of which came early in the month, before the world was paralyzed. Due to corona and the economic uncertainties it brings, the next couple months of mail will be smaller than usual. I've largely stopped sending anything. Our mail carriers have enough to deal with right now so I'll be saving my letters until this is over.

The grand total of unique NHL signatures in my collection now stands at 6,532 for 84% of everyone to ever play in the league.

                      Moe Roberts (d. 1975)
A member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, Moe Roberts made his NHL debut with the 1925/26 Boston Bruins as an emergency replacement. During the 1930s, he played 8 more NHL games with the New York Americans. Roberts was a long time professional goalie who spent most of his career with the Cleveland Barons. He was 19 when he made his NHL debut with the Bruins and in 1951 he made his final appearance in the NHL as an emergency replacement for the Chicago Blackhawks, he was 45 and at the time it gave him the exceptionally interesting distinction of being the oldest player ever to play a NHL game and the youngest man ever to play goal in the NHL. He still holds the distinction of being the oldest goalie to every play in the NHL.

                            Bun Cook (d. 1988)
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995, Bun Cook won the Stanley Cup in 1928 and 1933 with the New York Rangers. His brothers, Bill and Frank, both played in the NHL with Bun.

After a few years out of the game, he signed with the Oilers in 1992 and from 1993 to 1995 he played another 30 NHL games with Edmonton. Due to the fast pace of the modern NHL, few people are able to step away, and then return as Mark did.

Russian defenseman Anatoli Fedotov played 1 NHL game with the 1992/93 Winnipeg Jets and 3 NHL games with the 1993/94 Anaheim Mighty Ducks. He hold the unique distinction of being the only NHL player to play in the league before being drafted. He had signed with Winnipeg's AHL team in '92 and was recalled by the Jets but after just 1 game, the NHL ruled him ineligible, that the Jets didn't have claim to his rights and that he would have to return to the AHL. Fedotov was thus drafted the following summer by Anaheim.

This one goes with my collection of NHL GMs & Coaches with no NHL playing experience.

                             John Toffey
John Toffey is best known for his pro hockey career. He never made it to the NHL but I wanted to get him for my baseball/hockey collection because he one of only about a dozen people to ever get drafted by both an MLB and NHL team. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2001 but never pursued a baseball career.
